Electricity Aftermath

Crnica, Šibenik, Croatia
Location Croatia
Period 2025 - ongoing

The citizens of Šibenik want to participate in revalorization of Crnica and search for its sustainable future

The river Krka and its waterfalls enabled the city of Šibenik to be one of the first cities in the world that got lit by alternating current. Transforming the landscape around the river Krka, the rapid electrification gave a strong impetus to the industrial development, especially carbide industry in the district of Crnica, which gave Šibenik a special place on the global map of the proto-chemical industry at the beginning of the 20th Ct. The industry that had been rapidly developing all throughout the 20th Ct, was dismantled at the beginning of the 21th Ct, when Šibenik turned to mono-economy of touristic (over)development. Although aware of the pollution that the industry provoked to the city and its sea area, many citizens of Šibenik regret that the industrial memory of their town has been erased, and therefore claim the possibility of inscribing the memory of the industry that enabled post WWII modernization of Šibenik.

The mediation and artistic process’s purpose to is to instil a contemporary artwork into the public domain in a form that would simultaneously alert to the challenges of the energy transition we live today, include citizens into planning of their own city, and advocate for sustainable forms of tourism that would preserve the common Mediterranean for future generations, as a part of overall Art Living Lab to Repair the Land project.
